WHICH COUNTRIES GRANT CITIZENSHIP AT BIRTH

Birthright citizenship (Jus soli) is a rule of law according to which a child is granted citizenship of the country in which he or she was born, regardless of the citizenship/nationality of the parents. Such a rule is in place in dozens of countries around the world, including developed countries such as the US and Canada.

In some countries, local laws provide for citizenship by birthright, but with certain conditions. For example, one or both parents must have passports of this country or at least a residence permit. Next, let's find out which countries give citizenship by birthright in 2024.

Important. Today, no European country grants citizenship solely on the basis of birth (jus soli). Basically, this norm applies in the states of North and South America. Almost all states in Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania grant citizenship on the basis of the principle of jus sanguinis (right of blood), i.e. by inheritance from parents, not by place of birth.

Today, many experts are critical of the unconditional granting of citizenship by birth. As an argument, they cite numerous cases when people try by any means, not always legal, to cross the border and give birth to a child in a country like the United States in order to provide their offspring with an American passport.

The so-called ‘birth tourism’ is often resorted to by very wealthy people, including show business stars, politicians and entrepreneurs, who specifically give birth to children in paid clinics in the United States.

In early 2020, amendments were made to US legislation that make it more difficult for foreign citizens to obtain non-immigrant visas to travel to the US to give birth.
