COUNTRIES BY LEVEL OF DEMOCRACY
Full-fledged democracies are countries with a political culture that respects fundamental political and civil liberties. They have systems of checks and balances, a well-functioning government, an independent and authoritative judiciary, and the media.
The Economist Intelligence Unit is the research and analytical arm of the Economist Group, which, among other things, regularly measures the state of democracy in 167 countries, of which 166 are sovereign states and 164 are UN member states.
The ranking (index) is based on 60 indicators grouped into five separate categories measuring pluralism, civil liberties and political culture. All countries are classified into one of four types of regimes: full democracies, imperfect democracies, hybrid regimes, and authoritarian regimes.
Next, based on current Economist Intelligence Unit data, we will highlight the ranking of countries by level of democracy in 2024.
