MOST DANGEROUS COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD
The most dangerous countries in the world are located mainly in Africa and the Middle East. Long-term military confrontations, internal political struggle for power, increased level of terrorist threat and some other negative factors, in most cases, do not allow these states to reach a decent level of economic development, ensure social equality and raise the welfare of their citizens.
For 17 years, specialists from one of the world's leading think tanks, the Institute for Economics and Peace, have been compiling a ranking of 163 independent states (over 99.7% of the world's population), which are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on 23 indicators. The main indicators are the overall level of security in the society, the degree of militarization, the scale of internal and international conflicts.
Based on the Global Peace Index 2023 report, let's look at the top 10 most dangerous countries in the world in 2024.

TOP 10 MOST DANGEROUS COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD
1.AFGHANISTAN
The most dangerous country in the world in 2024 is Afghanistan. Civil wars have been waged here for decades, including with the participation of foreign countries. Currently, the internal political situation is relatively calm, a central government has been formed, but insurgent groups continue their resistance and demand the complete withdrawal of all foreign armed forces from Afghanistan. Hotels with foreign nationals are frequently subject to terrorist attacks and there is a threat of kidnapping throughout the country.
2.YEMEN
In second place on the list of the most dangerous countries in the world is the Arab state located in the southwestern part of Asia – Yemen. The ongoing struggle for power, the activities of terrorist groups and gangs make life in Yemen unbearable. Local residents are often unable to meet basic needs for food, water and medical care. Illegal detention and kidnapping of people in Yemen, including foreigners, occur at every turn.
3.SYRIA
Syria is the recent leader of the ranking of the most dangerous countries. Today, it is still extremely unsafe for locals and tourists alike. On the territory of many Syrian cities fighting with the use of various types of weapons and equipment, including artillery, tanks and airplanes, does not subside. Some regions of Syria are under the control of terrorist groups. According to various estimates, more than 450,000 people have been killed in the country since the beginning of the military conflict.
4.SOUTH SUDAN
Traveling to South Sudan is extremely dangerous. The country is located in the northeastern part of Africa and is landlocked. In 2011, in a referendum, 98% of locals voted in favor of secession from Sudan and the country gained its long-awaited independence. Nevertheless, military conflicts continue between government forces and the opposition, resulting in civilian deaths, a humanitarian crisis, and undermining South Sudan's food security.
5.DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
For seven years (since 2017), the Democratic Republic of Congo has been ranked among the top 10 most dangerous countries in the world. The state is located in central Africa. It has the second largest territory on the continent and is also the fourth most populous country. The problems of the Democratic Republic of Congo consist of military conflicts, kidnappings, a large-scale influx of refugees from neighboring regions and a difficult humanitarian situation.
6.RUSSIA
According to the experts of the Institute of Economics and Peace, the top 10 most dangerous countries in the world include two representatives of the post-Soviet space. One of them is the Russian Federation. Russia is included in the list of the most dangerous states mainly because of its high degree of militarization, including arms buildup, as well as its involvement in international conflicts, particularly in Syria and Ukraine.
7.UKRAINE
Among the top ten most dangerous countries in the world is the Eastern European state of Ukraine. The main reason is the long military conflict, which results in loss of life, destruction of industrial and civilian infrastructure. Despite the absence of military operations throughout the territory of Ukraine, the degree of militarization of society, shelling and other negative factors do not guarantee a safe stay in this state.
8.SOMALIA
Even after the collapse of the authoritarian ruling regime in 1991, which carried out large-scale persecution, imprisonment and torture of political opponents, the situation in Somalia has not stabilized. Unrest and anarchy in the country persist to this day. Residents suffer from hunger, low literacy, unsanitary conditions and oppression. Terrorist attacks and attacks by bandit groups have targeted not only local towns but also foreign naval vessels.
9.SUDAN
Sudan is one of the largest states in Africa, located in the northeastern part of the continent. Since gaining independence in 1956, the countries has been plunged into a long Civil War, which has caused tens of thousands of deaths and led to a major humanitarian disaster. International human rights organizations have documented violent attacks on civilians by government forces and the brutal suppression of protests and demonstrations.
10.IRAQ
US military operations in Iraq took place from 2003 to 2011. As a result, the former government was overthrown and legislative elections were held. Today, the level of tension in the country has been significantly reduced, but some areas in the north and west of the state are controlled by terrorists, against whom government forces, with the help of Western countries, are fighting. Therefore, the security situation in Iraq is still uncertain and can deteriorate at any moment.
The top 30 most dangerous countries in the world in 2024 also include other developed states with strong economies. For example, Israel (21) and Turkey (16). Nevertheless, these countries are popular tourist and immigration destinations.
