WHAT CHANGED IN PRICES OVER THE LAST YEAR
Statistics Portugal estimated that annual consumer-price inflation reached 3.6% in September 2026, up 0.3 percentage points from August. The provisional monthly increase was 1.2%, compared with no monthly change in August. The annual average inflation rate over the preceding 12 months was estimated at 2.8%.
The September acceleration was driven largely by fuel. The annual change in energy products rose to 15.4%, while unprocessed food was 3.6% more expensive than a year earlier. Core inflation, which excludes unprocessed food and energy, was estimated at 2.7%. For a household that drives regularly, the change in petrol can therefore affect the monthly budget more than many supermarket items.
