Labour market in Denmark

The employment rate in Denmark is just over 69%, and unemployment is about 2–3%. The country has a dynamic labor market with predominantly qualified personnel, high competition for vacancies and decent wages. Foreign specialists need to have a popular profession in Denmark and sufficient work experience and knowledge of English.

Legal employment in Denmark requires a number of prerequisites to be met by a foreign applicant. In particular, it is necessary to find a vacancy and sign an employment contract in advance, apply for a work permit and obtain a residence permit in Denmark. The best option for foreigners (outside the European Union) is to use a special program, such as The Positive List and The Pay Limit.

There is no official minimum wage in Danish law. But the average rate is about 110 crowns per hour (14.5 euros) or slightly more than 2 thousand euros per month. According to official data from the Danish Statistical Office, the average salary in Denmark is 38,854 krone a month before taxes (5,215 euros). After tax, local workers have about 3,100 euros.

The most demanded professions in Denmark

The most popular among foreigners from third countries is seasonal work in Denmark on farms and greenhouses to collect berries, fruits, vegetables and crops, as well as temporary employment in hotels, bars and restaurants – waiters, bartenders, maids and so on. Demand for such vacancies is significantly limited, so more chances have qualified specialists.

The most realistic way to go to work in Denmark is to use the Positive List program. The country has an official list of professions for which there is a shortage. If a foreigner has the required qualifications and experience, he/she may obtain a work permit for the duration of the employment contract plus 6 months or 4 years if no time limit is set.

Important. The official list of professions in demand in Denmark is updated twice a year, on January 1 and July 1. Below is the latest information as of January 1, 2024.
