SHORTAGE OCCUPATIONS IN LITHUANIA

Lithuania is a small Baltic state with a population of just under 3 million people, located in the north-eastern part of Europe. It is washed by the waters of the Baltic Sea and borders with Poland, Russia, Latvia and the Republic of Belarus. Today, life in Lithuania attracts many foreigners from different parts of the world.

Since 2004 Lithuania has been a member of the European Union, and in 2015 it joined the euro zone. Despite the marked economic lagging behind the more successful European countries, the Lithuanian authorities are taking a number of measures to improve the well-being of local residents, including modernizing the labor market and increasing wages. Let's find out what professions are in demand in Lithuania in 2024.

Labour market in Lithuania

Unemployment in Lithuania during the year ranges from 8 to 9%, and inflation is around 2%. The real labor force numbers just over 1.3 million people. Most of the employees cover the spheres of wholesale and retail trade, production and education. In general, Lithuanian employers are interested in attracting mainly highly qualified foreign workers with a profession demanded by Lithuania.

For legal employment, which involves obtaining a special permit and work visa to Lithuania, foreign applicants must first find a vacancy and sign an employment contract. This is quite difficult to do, as the priority right to work is given to local residents, as well as citizens of the EU and EFTA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway). At the same time, at least a month of vacancy must be in the public domain, including registration at the Lithuanian Labor Exchange.

The income of Lithuanians is no longer the lowest in the European Union. For example, the minimum wage in 2024 is 924 euros per month, which is higher than in neighboring Latvia and Estonia, as well as in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and even in Poland. According to official data from the Lithuanian Department of Statistics, the average salary in Lithuania before taxes is 1,887.8 euros per month. After all mandatory deductions, 1,177.30 euros remains at the disposal of employees.
